Hyaluronic Acid. Whilst its name can be slightly misleading, this gentle yet active ingredient is your secret to softer and younger looking skin.
If you’re recoiling in horror at the thought of putting anything with the word ‘acid’ near your skin, we don’t blame you! Hyaluronic Acid might have a nasty name, but its amazing results are anything but.
A naturally occurring substance within the human body, with high concentrations in our skin and eyes, HA is often pegged as a miracle anti-aging ingredient. HY-drate your skin, with hyaluronic acid. Sound a little less scary now?
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Scientifically speaking, hyaluronic acid is a ‘glycosaminoglycan’, which is a type of molecule composed partly of sugars. It is a natural component in the structure of our skin and is also found in our eyes, connective tissue, and joints. HA is so important in our body because it retains moisture, more so than any other natural or synthetic material. One gram of HA is able to hold up to 6 litres of water! In regards to our skin, HA is an anti-aging ingredient: young looking skin is well moisturised skin. As we get older, our skin loses its levels of HA causing dryness, wrinkles, and sagging skin.
WHEN WAS IT FIRST USED?
Believe it or not, HA was first used commercially in a bakery! In 1942, a Hungarian inventor named Endre Balazs applied for a patent to use it as a substitute for egg white in bakery products. Whilst it didn’t make the cut for a delicious meringue, its discovery was groundbreaking: no other molecule had ever been discovered that has such unique properties to the human body. Endre Balazs went on to become an international expert in hyaluronic acid, and made the majority of discoveries in modern skincare.
Hyaluronic acid is an all-rounder for beautiful skin, helping to achieve:
- Moisturising and hydration
- The reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
- Increased skin elasticity
- Wound healing support
- Restoration of barrier function
IS IT SAFE TO USE ON SENSITIVE FACIAL SKIN?
As HA is a naturally occurring acid, it is perfectly safe to apply onto our skin. Once upon a time, HA used to be extracted from rooster combs – but as Synthesis is proud to be 100% animal-friendly, and a vegan /organic label, we will only ever use HA that is non-synthetic, non-animal derived, sourced through biotechnology. HA is safe to use on all skin types, including very sensitive skin.
