Management Accountant / Finance & Systems Lead
Part-time (school hours), 5 days/week | Predominantly on-site | Byron Bay
About Synthesis Organics
Synthesis Organics is a multi award-winning beauty and wellness company committed to enlightened self care. Through the alchemy of nature, science and spirit, we create high-performance holistic and certified organic products of unparalleled purity. We’re a passionate, creative and close-knit team, and we prioritise a positive and heart-led culture — with flexibility, regular team moments, and monthly product credits so you can enjoy the goodness of our nutrient-rich organic products.
The opportunity
We’re seeking a hands-on, systems-minded Management Accountant / Finance & Systems Lead to stabilise our finance foundations and embed reliable operational systems. This is an operationally embedded role — you’ll partner heavily with production to create one clear version of financial truth and drive better decision-making.
This role spans transactional finance through to month-end close, management reporting, variance analysis, budgeting/forecasting, inventory valuation + COGS integrity, and MRP ↔ Xero system embedding, working closely with Ops on-site. You’ll be central to improving cost control, ensuring inventory data is trustworthy, and delivering practical commercial insights.
What you’ll do (core scope)
- Own month-end discipline: close process, journals, reconciliations, and a monthly reporting pack (P&L, cash, key variances)
- Partner with Ops / production to improve cost control and performance (COGS integrity, process discipline, practical efficiencies)
- Inventory valuation + stocktake: support stocktake routines, reconcile movements, and maintain inventory valuation integrity in Xero
- COGS + gross margin insight: identify drivers of margin movement and flag issues early (pricing, freight, packaging, wastage, production variances)
- Budgeting + forecasting: support budgeting, rolling forecasts, and variance explanations to help steer the business
- Systems ownership: champion the MRP ↔ Xero bridge (data readiness, reconciliation discipline, SOPs) alongside our implementation partner
- Keep Xero clean and current (AP/AR, daily bank feed reconciliation, balance sheet integrity and audit-ready files)
- Run payroll and maintain accurate employee/pay records
- Manage statutory cadence (BAS/IAS, PAYG/super as applicable)
- HR admin coordination in partnership with EmploySure (records / onboarding / offboarding admin; not performance management)
Secondary (phased)
- Procurement (introduced gradually); Procurement is currently shared across the team. In the first few months, your focus will be on putting simple foundations in place — supplier details, pricing/terms visibility, and a basic PO/approvals rhythm. Once the finance + inventory engine is stable, you’ll progressively take on more responsibility for supplier coordination and sourcing improvements.
Role details
- Hours: Part-time, ideally school hours across 5 days/week (e.g. 9am–3pm; flexible)
- Some extra hours may be needed at month-end, stocktakes or system go-live windows.
- Location: Predominantly on-site
- Reports to: Commercial & Finance Lead, working closely with Founder + Ops team
About you
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in management accounting (or similar), ideally with inventory-heavy experience
- Strong financial acumen — comfortable explaining results, variances and drivers to stakeholders
- Relevant tertiary qualifications (CA/CPA desirable)
- Strong Xero capability (non-negotiable)
- Payroll experience and confidence with compliance rhythms
- Systems mindset: able to reconcile inventory/MRP movements to the ledger and build repeatable processes
- Calm, practical, process-improving operator; values-aligned with a heart-led business
