Create your perfect meditation space

The power of meditation is immense, and we're sure most of you have already experienced it - but how many of you have a dedicated space to use? Wouldn't it incredible to have a room or area in your life committed to peace, tranquility and healing?

Not only will having a meditation space help you to physically escape the stresses of every day life, but it will also spread mindfulness throughout the rest of your home.

You'll soon find that even just walking past your space will becoming a soothing exercise. It can also be helpful for those just starting to practise, as it can be much easier to find inner peace in a room that is full of it. While there are no hard and fast rules to creating the perfect meditation space, here are our suggestions - just remember that ultimately follow your heart and mind to fill it with the things you love!

Start by choosing the right space

  • You ideally want a space with plenty of natural light, in a quiet part of the house and with minimal foot traffic.
  • If nothing is working inside, consider utilising an outside space, such as a patio or part of the garden.
  • It is also important to keep in mind your air supply - free-flowing air can make a significant difference in your ability to find inner harmony.

Keep it clean

  • Being surrounded by clutter can become very distracting, and can interfere with your ability to practise stillness.
  • Whatever space you decided on, make sure that it isn't somewhere that is naturally busy, such as an office or a kitchen.
  • Try to include only a few elements in your chosen space, such as a yoga mat, pillow, small table, and a candle.

Make your decorations personal

  • Fill your space will items that speak to you on a tranquil level. These can include flowers, blankets and throws, scented candles, a Buddha or anything else that brings you peace.
  • Being surrounded with items that already naturally calm you down will not only make meditation much easier, but will also define your space from the rest of the house.

Bring nature to you

  • Including elements from nature is organically relaxing and healing, and will infuse your space with harmony and balance
  • This commonly means plants or flowers - either freshly cut or floating in a bowl of water or a small potted plant. A bonsai can be the perfect addition to your space, but they do require some maintenance.
  • Natural elements aren't limited to plants though, you can also use sand, shells, and even a water feature to make the space yours.

Use aromatherapy

  • Beautiful and soothing scents can do wonderful things to balance your inner energy and destress and unwind.
  • By pairing meditation with aromatherapy, it will not only help you with practicing stillness but can also deliver many other benefits, such as muscle relaxation and boosting your immune system.
  • We love using lavender, chamomile, peppermint, orange or sandalwood, but you can use any scent that you find soothing and familiar.
  • Try our Light Haven and Chakra balance essential oil blend, or our Bright Space Aura Cleansing Mist.

Make your space sacred

  • There is nothing more important to creating a meditation space than to make sure that you recognise it as yours!
  • Think about objects, sounds or scents that you find soothing, and make sure that you include a few to surround you when meditating - just make sure it's not overcrowded.
  • Make your space yours, and make sure that only you use it for your intended purpose - be careful not to let it get overrun by the rest of the house!
